Behave Yourself
The political is the spiritual. Today's events invite those of us who err on the hot-headed side to up our game in charity, humility, and intercessory prayer.
This is not a political post, it is an evangelization post. The topic is this: Do not use today’s political events as your excuse to be a jerk.
Remember your dignity in Christ. Kindly refrain from:
Gloating. It’s always ugly. Don’t do it.
Cursing. I didn’t say “cussing” (a different topic). Cursing is when you say things like “You’ll get what you deserve” or “Now you’ll pay the price” or any other wishing of ill on others.
Spouting ignorant nonsense. It’s embarrassing.
Instead you can practice:
Absolute charity and kindness in thought, word, and deed.
Wishing the good of the other in every situation.
Renewing your devotion to Divine Mercy and the Sacred Heart.
Humbly acknowledging the limits of your expertise as a legal scholar and scrupulously refraining from spreading misinformation about the present situation.
But most importantly, put first things first. The United States is now entering a period of intense political and social instability. Today and the days ahead are the time for prayer and fasting for the good of the nation and the world.
Thanks for your doing part.
Quick note to paying subscribers: I’ve had limited writing time and wi-fi access over the past few weeks as I’ve been spending time with my extended family. (I did not anticipate this — I had expected more writing time. Life surprises!) You, of course, are generously paying for a regular feed of opportunities to publicly share your reactions to my writing here in the combox. Don’t fret. I will absolutely comp you with extra time on the tail end of your subscription so that you get a fair share of content on which to opine. Thank you so much for your support of the work!
To everyone - God bless and take care. I’ll be fully unplugged through the weekend, and internet life in the week ahead is still TBD. If you are a free subscriber and have sent in comments via e-mail, as always: I do read them and take them to heart, even when I cannot answer with a personal reply. I love you all and am praying for your intentions.
Mr. Purrkins reminds you to keep your priorities in order: God, family, and playing outside. If you have to ask where the cat fits in on that list, you’re doing it wrong.
Thank you, Jen, for helping me to focus my thoughts.
